Cluenet supports user vhosts via Anope's HostServ, but we do discourage VHosts without a reason. In IRC, "/msg HostServ help" for how to request one. Although Cluenet does allow vhosts, we do have rules and recommendations about vhosts. A vhost may be rejected on the basis of one of the below guidelines. See an oper for details. These same rules apply to real DNS vhosts. Note that if all you want to do is hide your host, you can set usermode +x yourself.

[edit] Bad VHosts

  • VHosts that form DNS spam, such as full sentences or expressions. ie, "i.love.long.lame.vhosts"
  • VHosts that do not follow relevant Clueful Chatting guidelines. ie, "l33tz0rz.example.com"
  • VHosts that intentionally spoof existing domains owned by an unassociated organization. ie, "myvhost.fbi.gov"
  • VHosts that contain profanity. (Example Censored) :)
  • VHosts that are intentionally misleading. ie, "services.cluenet.org"
  • VHosts that suggest you have power, when indeed you do not. ie, "192.168.0.1", "localhost", etc

[edit] Acceptable VHosts

  • VHosts that are your web site's domain name. ie, "mypersonalsite.net"
  • VHosts that are clearly vhosts that include your nick. ie, "MyNick.vhosts.cluenet.org"
  • VHosts that include the domain name of your workplace's web site. ie, "microsoft.com" (As if anyone here would work for Microsoft ...)
  • VHosts that don't violate the above rules that include your ISP's host. ie, "MyNick.ny.rr.com"
  • VHosts that indicate your position in Cluenet. ie, "opers.cluenet.org" or "users.cluenet.org"
